Quality Analysis 100/100
This denim is built for the long haul, featuring an extremely heavy 18oz Sasayama selvedge denim and robust construction details like chain-stitched hems and hidden back pocket rivets, ensuring exceptional resistance to wear and tear. Furthermore, the inclusion of Samurai Jeans, a brand renowned for its durability-oriented ethos and "seed to stitch" quality, strongly indicates superior longevity.
Comfort Assessment 60/100
This 18oz Sasayama selvedge denim is made from 100% cotton, suggesting a rigid and heavyweight feel, which may limit comfort due to the lack of stretch. The Relaxed Tapered fit, however, offers a high rise with room in the thigh, potentially mitigating some restriction.
Sustainability Impact 90/100
This denim is highly sustainable, featuring a "Samurai Cotton Project" where the cotton is homegrown, harvested, and woven in Japan, minimizing transport and supporting local agriculture. Furthermore, the fabric is dyed using Kuri Tamba, a natural dye derived from Tamba Chestnut skins grown in the same area as the cotton, demonstrating a closed-loop, low-impact dyeing process.

Introducing the Shizen Selvedge Denim, the first collaboration between Samurai Jeans and Blue Owl. This collection combines Samurai's homegrown "Cotton Project" cotton with a range of natural overdyes, made exclusively for Blue Owl. Translated to "Splash", the Shibuki dye features the same Tamba chestnut dye found in the Kuri variant, with a lighter exposure resulting in a khaki-beige color. Dyed using Kuri Tamba, a dye derived from Tamba Chestnut skins. The chestnuts used to dye this fabric are grown in the same area as the cotton for this series.Grown, harvested, and woven in Japan, this collector's edition denim was originally conceptualized as a passion-project by Samurai Jeans founder Toru Nogami to produce a completely made in Japan denim from seed to stitch. Fittingly named the "Samurai Cotton Project," this 18oz selvedge denim sports a highly-visible slub and nep. The jeans come packed with symbolism referencing the brand's traditional warrior ethos including special edition iron buttons, jacquard pocket bags, back pocket rivets, and a custom co-branded leather patch.
