Attribute deep dive
We break down what drove each score so you can weigh trade-offs.
Quality Analysis 100/100
This denim is built for the long haul, featuring an extremely heavy 18oz selvedge denim fabric and robust construction details like chain-stitched hems and hidden back pocket rivets, which significantly reinforce stress points. Furthermore, the inclusion of custom branded iron buttons speaks to a commitment to quality hardware over cheaper alternatives.
Comfort Assessment 50/100
This denim is likely to be rigid and heavy, given the 18oz weight and 100% cotton composition, which suggests a lack of stretch for movement. The "Slim Straight fit" with a "moderate room in the thigh" may offer some comfort, but the overall structure points toward stiffness.
Sustainability Impact 90/100
This garment features several positive sustainability indicators, including the use of homegrown Japanese cotton and a traditional susuzome sumi ink overdye, which suggests a focus on natural materials and traditional, potentially lower-impact dyeing methods. Furthermore, the "Samurai Cotton Project" emphasizes a seed-to-stitch, locally-sourced approach, which reduces transportation emissions.

Introducing the Shizen Selvedge Denim, the first collaboration between Samurai Jeans and Blue Owl. This collection combines Samurai's homegrown "Cotton Project" cotton with a range of natural overdyes, made exclusively for Blue Owl. This iteration is dyed using traditional susuzome sumi ink, commonly used in calligraphy, resulting in a deep charcoal-black color that highlights the cotton’s natural slub variation.Grown, harvested, and woven in Japan, this collector's edition denim was originally conceptualized as a passion-project by Samurai Jeans founder Toru Nogami to produce a completely made in Japan denim from seed to stitch. Fittingly named the "Samurai Cotton Project," this 18oz selvedge denim sports a highly-visible slub and nep. The jeans come packed with symbolism referencing the brand's traditional warrior ethos including special edition iron buttons, jacquard pocket bags, back pocket rivets, and a custom co-branded leather patch.
