Quality Analysis 90/100
This denim is built for the long haul, featuring a substantial 15oz Japanese slub selvedge fabric and robust construction details like hidden back pocket rivets and chain-stitched hems, ensuring it will evolve beautifully rather than fall apart. The use of custom nickel hardware and a deerskin patch further signals a commitment to high-quality, lasting components.
Comfort Assessment 70/100
The comfort score is set at the default 70 because the text provides no specific comfort indicators, such as stretch, soft materials, or seam treatments, focusing instead on the unique dyeing process and heavyweight denim construction.
Sustainability Impact 70/100
This garment features kakishibu dyeing, a traditional Japanese technique utilizing fermented persimmon tannins, which is a natural, bio-based dye alternative to conventional synthetic dyes. However, the use of sulfur dye for the black warp and a deerskin leather patch introduces potential environmental and animal welfare concerns.

This special release from Pure Blue Japan reimagines the brand’s Extra Slub Series with a unique combination of sulfur black and kakishibu dye treatments. Kakishibu, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique, uses fermented persimmon tannins aged for at least two years to produce a rich amber hue that fades and transforms similar to indigo. The denim’s deep black surface comes from a sulfur dye process, in which sulfur compounds bond to the yarn’s outer layer. The result is a fabric that evolves beautifully with wear, highlighting the depth of both dyes and the dramatic texture of the ultra-slubby yarns. As with other styles in PBJ’s catalog, this denim is woven on vintage shuttle looms using a slow, deliberate weaving process to create the brand’s signature texture. Finished with custom hardware, a deerskin leather patch, and Pure Blue Japan’s iconic indigofera leaf embroidery.
